We've been very pleased with the training program Tekulve has developed and overseen with our daughter, Corinne. Greg Tekulve really took the time to get to know Corinne, recognizing her strengths and areas for improvement. He has truly personalized her program, as he does with each person he works with. I think people wonder why anyone would choose to come Tekulve and be pushed beyond their breaking point in runs and exercises. Tekulve makes athletes. Part of being an athlete is not only having an understanding for yourself physically, but also mentally. From my times coming to Greg I have become not only a stronger athlete, but a stronger individual.
I was a sophomore bored out of my mind in the off season between cross country and outdoor track season when I was referenced to Tekulve Acceleration Training. I’ve been going to Tekulve for over a year, and I have loved every minute of my time there. Yes, I love running on the treadmill. Some may say I’m crazy, but every time I go there I know I am getting the best possible workout to develop me into the fastest runner I can be. I remember walking in for my fourth run when Greg gave a joking smile and said "We are going to have fun today!” I heard the word “fun” but for some reason my stomach turned in knots of worry for what was to come. An hour later and I was ready to give up, go home, and sleep. One more run. “It can't be any worse than the other ones,” I reasoned with myself as I stepped up to the treadmill. It was then leaned than that you can never expect what comes next.
There is a sense of friendship and commitment that you feel when training there. Getting to know Greg more as well, you learn his witty-sass and blunt-charm are some of the best ways you are pushed and challenged. Part of being an athlete is having a good coach. Greg gets to know everyone who comes to him on a personal level. And regardless of what he says, he loves kids (don’t tell him though). He works to make you successful; he wants you to be at your best level. During my track season I was able to make it all the way as a regional qualifier in both the 1600m and the 4x800m. I won both the 1600m at the league meet and the district meet. I owe my success to Greg because of the runs and weights he got me accustomed to doing so that when it came time to compete I was prepared for any competition. When track season ended with huge success for my first season, I was already talking to Greg about the upcoming Cross Country season and the goals for the future.
My cross country season of 2015 ended up being my hardest season. As I struggled with unexplainable blackouts after meets, I wondered how the upcoming track season would play out. Greg made sure to ask how everything felt before and after runs, as sometimes I would lose feeling in my arms. It was one day I was training by myself, as I began to become more hesitant about my runs, dreading the possibility of lightheadedness and numbness in my hands. Then, Greg said to me seriously;
“Corinne, do you worry about being hit by a bus when you cross the street?”
“No” I said slightly confused
“Well then you cannot be worried about what happens when you run, you just need to run. You can’t worry about what may or may not happen. Just don’t get hit by the bus”
He proceeded to tell me I owed him money for the free therapy session. But, it just goes to show that Tekulve is the best out there from the intense sprints, long runs, extra weights, plyometric, and encouraging spirits. Success isn’t natural, it’s hard work. Tekulve is hard work. It’s success.
